FAQs

I’m a new business owner - is this for me?
It’s never too early to start promoting your business – and the work that you’ll do to create your media bio will give you a solid foundation and clarity on who you want to work, why you want to work with them and how you can help them. A media bio is the basis of your marketing & PR strategy.
I feel like putting myself out there will make it look like I’m tooting my horn - isn’t that a bit embarrassing?
First of all, if you have a business, it’s essential that you put yourself “out there” – you can’t help anyone if they don’t know you exist!

Second of all, PR is the opposite of tooting your own horn – it’s someone tooting your horn for you! PR is literally someone else sharing your story, saying that you’re good at what you do, and featuring you on merit. It’s someone else putting you in front of their audience to show that you know what you’re talking about and that you have an interesting story.

This brings me to my third-of-all, which is that PR isn’t only about your expertise. In fact, more often than not, it’s about you and your story – as humans, we’re inspired and comforted by other people’s lived experience – so, if you’re willing to share your story, that alone can help people (in other words, it’s not about you, it’s about the people you can help).

I’m not sure that I want to share all of my story - there are things that are private to me. Can I still create a media bio?

You do not have to share anything you don’t want to share or that you’re not ready to share. This is your media bio, which means that you only put in it the things that you’re ready to share. You get to decide which parts of your story you want to tell.

Are the media really going to be interested in me?
In a word – YES!! Every time you pick up a magazine or a newspaper or turn on the TV or radio and see a quote or hear someone who’s not a big celeb or professional “talking head” being interviewed, sharing their story, showcasing their expertise or giving their thoughts and opinions on current affairs, it’s someone just like you. The only difference is that they’ve put themselves forward to be in that position. Journalists and producers need people to fill the pages of their publications and the air on their channels!
How will I know which parts of my story are interesting?
