When you have your own business there is so much talk about nailing your ideal client, your target audience and how you need to speak to one person through your marketing – and it can be quite overwhelming! 

Believe it or not but you can actually use the media to get the clarity you need on your ideal client.

 

How the media can act as a shortcut to nailing your ideal client

All media outlets have a mission statement of who they are trying to target and this will be the deciding factor on whether or not they will include a story for their audience. 

The media, whether you are talking about Good Housekeeping, Red, Stylist, Daily Mail etc, will have an audience profile based on gender, age, location, interests, employment status among other things.

The media have already done that ideal client research for you. So why not use the media to get inside the head of your ideal client? 

 

How to actually use this ideal client hack in reality

If you know who your ideal client is, you will have a rough idea of what they are interested in and what sort of media they might read. 

If you aren’t sure, I would recommend popping down to your local newsagent or supermarket and have a look through the newsstand and try to get a feel for which publications would be perfect for your ideal customer. 

I would even suggest buying the publications to research what is in there, to see what kind of stories they cover and what your target audience might be interested in.

 

How can you use this media to your advantage?

If you review these publications regularly you will start to gain a great insight into:

  • what is of interest to your audience
  • what trends are popular
  • what key dates do they focus on

This research will not only bring you closer to your audience by nailing your niche even further but it will also give you an insight as to what other places you could add to your PR plan to build your audience. 

 

The media have done this research already so why not piggyback on it to make use of that information for your own business!
