When you start envisioning your business—where you want to be seen, what you want to accomplish—it all comes back to one fundamental question:
“Who are you trying to reach?”
Yes, we’re in business to generate income (alongside other passions), but it’s crucial to clearly understand who is most likely to buy your products or services. Think about the specifics of your ideal customer:
– Are they male or female?
– What age range do they fall into?
– Where do they live?
– Are they employed or self-employed?
– What are their likes and dislikes?
– What media do they consume?
These questions—and more—will help you gain the clarity you need to connect with the right audience and grow your business.
Throughout my career in PR, the most successful clients I have had, whether they have done their own PR or I have done it for them, are the clients who know exactly who they are trying to reach.
Working out who your target audience is crucial so you can work out how to reach them! If you don’t know who you are trying to reach, how do you know how to find them?
When you know who your ideal client is, you can plan exactly where you need to be seen, and when you need to take action – crucial aspects of your PR planning process.
What other ways can knowing your ideal client help?
- It can also help with pitching! When you submit a pitch, if you can be really clear why you are relevant to their target audience (who are likely to be your target audience too), then your chance of success will be so much higher.
- When deciding where to spend your time, it can help knowing where to focus your efforts. We all have a finite amount of time and an infinite number of opportunities, so you need to prioritise on what activities are going to get you in front of the right people.
- If you know where your ideal client spends their time, you can use that to research the current trends and hot topics that will help build your content ideas and potential service/product ideas.
When you know who you are trying to reach, it will make everything so much easier, from social media, PR, speaking opportunities to collaborations, because you can focus on making that happen. If you are trying to reach everyone, then you reach no-one.
