I’ve previously written a blog post on what makes a newsworthy story, so I thought why not share some tips on how to make your own news?

This is such an exciting topic, as being able to create your own news gives you so much control and allows you to see opportunities within your own business that you may not have even been aware of.

Firstly, a quick recap on what makes news: 

News is all about things that are new, topical and timely and things that have relevance to the person reading them. 

There is a way you can make your own news for your own business and make it topical and timely. We all have things going on in our business on a daily basis so why not make the most of them and package them up into a story??

Here are some ways you can do exactly that, to share not only in the media but also across your social media channels!

 

1.Launches

Obviously launching a new business is a news hook, as it is new, topical and timely and if you are telling it in a business or local news setting, also relevant to the audience. 

I do appreciate your business may already be established, so that is where you can look at things such as re-launching, re-branding, or perhaps even some new products or services? What new aspects of your business could you showcase?

 

2.Events

Whether they be online or in person, events can be great news stories. 

It can be an event you are either putting on or an event you may even be attending and it must have an actual date and time associated with it. 

Perhaps a sale on your products or services, or even when a big announcement is being made?

You could even share any podcast appearances/media appearances on your own social media channels!

 

3.Milestones

This is very well used in the PR industry! 

You can be:

  1. counting down to something (e.g 100 days to an event/launch)
  2. an anniversary or a key date (e.g been in business for one year)
  3. a key achievement (e.g served your 500th customer or produced your 100th product)

What key milestones could you celebrate in your business?

Why not have a brainstorm of all the potential news hooks that are in control of your and your business? 

You can make these happen, rather than waiting for someone else to find out about it!
