Do you know where to start in getting your message out there? At the early stages it can be quite daunting, so today I wanted to cover 3 key questions you need to answer to make those first steps.

1.What is your key message?

By this I mean, what is it that you do and what do you want to be known for? Obviously when you are clear on that very crucial point, then sharing that message is an awful lot easier!

Do you want to be known as:

  • An expert
  • A creator of products
  • An inventor
  • A coach
  • A therapist

Questions that will help you find this out:

  1. What is your business?
  2. Why do you do what you do?
  3. How do you help people?
  4. What expertise do you have?
  5. What products have you got?

In the case of me, I want to be known as a PR expert who helps solopreneurs and passionate business owners to promote themselves with confidence and clarity through PR and media coverage.

Once your message becomes clear then it makes it a lot easier to determine WHERE you want the message to be seen. Leading on to….

2. Who do you want to get your message out to?

It is crucial to know who the people are that you are trying to help. Once you know who they are, it becomes an awful lot easier to actually find them (surprise, surprise!)

Wherever your location may be – social media, traditional media, podcasting – you always need to think about who is the person that you are actually trying to help.

Questions that will help you find this out:

  1. What age are they?
  2. Where are they based?
  3. Are they male or female?
  4. Who are they and what problems do they need solving?

I always recommend creating some headspace, grab a notebook with a cuppa and re-look at your business planning that you have inevitably done.

When starting your business you will have worked on your key messaging, which you can reflect upon to help you work out who you are actually writing for and where they may be ‘hanging out’.

3. Where to start getting these opportunities?

The first place I always tell people to start is to look at your existing network, particularly if you have an online business.

These days, we are our own media empire! We can have our own podcast, our own YouTube channel, you can even go on Clubhouse – you literally have your own broadcast media at your fingertips! Also not forgetting, social media where you can openly share your own stories on your own channels and online communities.

Yes – a massive part of PR is about media coverage. The media can reach a huge audience, they are respected and can also be very well targeted. But actually thinking about your network closer to home is a great place to start.

For example:

  • Who do you know that has a podcast?
  • Who do you know with their own Facebook group who interviews guest experts?

Look for places where you can add value. This is not about going into someone else’s Facebook group to get free PR and start selling. It is about engaging with others and building relationships and connections, which in turn may build your audience.

Look at your social media. Who in there has an audience that is similar to a one that you are looking to reach? Those are the places you want to put the effort in and to raise your profile.

You have those connections – USE them in a very positive way!

THEN you can look further afield in the traditional media arena when you feel ready.
