Top tip articles….

These are still one of the most popular types of content to create as they do so well in terms of engagement. People love digesting information in a real manageable way and tip articles are the ideal way to do it.

From a PR perspective, tips pieces offer a great opportunity to position yourself confidently as an expert.

They are a great way to get yourself out there!

Here are 3 tips on how to write a tips piece on your chosen topic:

Step 1: List Out Your Areas of Expertise.

If you have done your media bio – head straight there and look at all your wonderful areas of expertise!

If however, you have not done this exercise before, this is your chance to do it now.

  • What are your areas of expertise?
  • What could I talk non-stop about for 30 mins?
  • What do you do day in and day out?
  • What do you want to be known for?

These are the things you know more than the average person.

Doing this exercise will not only help you think of tips pieces for the media but can also help with your social media content, live videos, YouTube videos, blogs etc.

(this is also a great exercise to give you clarity on your business direction and your self confidence – look at this list and see how amazing you are!)

Step 2: Who is Your Ideal Client and What Do They Want?

Who is it that you are trying to reach with your business and who is it that you want to work with?

You want to marry Step 1 and Step 2 together.

  • What would your ideal client like to hear about from your list of expertise?
  • What topics from your list would be of interest to this person?
  • What does your audience most want to know? (think about the questions you always get asked all the time, one of mine is ‘where should I start with my PR?)

We’re not talking about where to share this tips piece at the moment, this is very much looking at making the information relevant to the person you are trying to reach. After you have defined this you can then think about where you want to share this information and where your ideal client would most likely consume it.

That is when PR becomes super powerful – when it is in complete alignment of your business goals.

Step 3: Pick Your Topic!

Now we are onto the fun stuff!

You have your ideal client and the key area of expertise they would like to hear about – now you need to pick 1 thing that you could write a top tips piece on.

E.g Chat magazine has a weekly ‘Solve it in Seven’ feature where experts share 7 tips on how to improve your life in just one week.

The media love this kind of approach as it gives an easy step by step approach to key problems that are relevant to their readers.

These are great opportunities for you to position yourself as the go to expert!

Here are some examples of titles for tips pieces (remember they can be on any topic – the trick is finding the right home for your expertise):

  • 7 things you MUST do when rehoming a pet
  • 10 natural remedies worth taking
  • 10 media opportunities for female entrepreneurs
  • 8 smart ways to cosy up your home
  • 5 tips to help your kids get onto the property ladder

Research the sort of media you’re targeting and see what types of top tip articles they feature to give yourself some inspiration.

TECH TIP: visit answerthepublic.com and type in your key topic area, it shows you the top questions people have been asking around that topic – this should give you some great ideas on what to write your tips pieces on!

By writing these pieces it positions you as an expert and gives people bitesize information to see what you know and how you can help them. It also gives the media great content.

They are a real win-win for everybody!
