Elevator pitches are incredibly useful and super important for your business.
“What is an elevator pitch Caroline and what does it have to do with PR?” I hear you ask….
It is all about how you introduce yourself and your business to anyone and anything – it sums up who you are and what you do, in a succinct statement.
– so yeah, it has everything to do with PR!
You will find yourself using it on many occasions, such as if you are being a guest expert in Facebook groups, group promotion posts (which you can do in my Facebook group – and many others – every month), pitching to the media, podcast introductions and promos, and introducing yourself at events and networking to name just a few.
I am going to be honest with you (as I always am) and tell you that I think this is one of the hardest things to do in your business. Trying to summarise yourself in one sentence can be a challenge but it is so worth doing.
I worked on mine for MONTHS… I tried to help myself but every time I introduced myself I would say something different… I had it all wrong!
I was trying to say what I did and what PR was, rather than thinking about what the benefits to the person I was introducing myself to would be.
So I got help from experts to craft an elevator pitch that would work, that I could use again and again without the fear of messing up my words. This meant I could be 100% confident when delivering it.
Anything that is content/copy related, you always have to think about the person who you are actually talking to and what they might need from you, rather than what you can do.
It is all about them.
THAT is how you can create a really strong elevator pitch.
So without further ado, let’s dive into how you can nail your elevator pitch once and for all!
Here is mine….
“I’m Caroline Joynson, founder of Cheerleader PR, and I help passionate business owners get media coverage and PR so that they can build relationships, raise their profile and make more sales.”
There is a 4 part formula which I used to develop my elevator pitch. Let’s break it down:
1. The easy bit….! Who you are and your business name.
“I’m Caroline Joynson, founder of Cheerleader PR”
2. Who are you helping? Who is your audience?
“I help passionate business owners”
3. What do you help them with? The first word should be a verb that will bring to life your promise, such as “get, do, create, become”
“get media coverage and PR”
4. The final piece of the puzzle is the “so they can” section. What are the top benefits that you help your audience with? What transformation are you going to give them as a result of working with you? Aim for 2-3 benefits.
“so that they can build relationships, raise their profile and make more sales.”
Once you have your elevator pitch nailed, learn it and start sharing it whenever you introduce yourself.
No more scrabbling around to find the right words, you will be able to speak with confidence about who you are and what you do, allowing you to start any conversation/pitch in the best way possible – who doesn’t want that?
So go on, give it a go!
