One of the most common questions I get asked when people join my Facebook group PR for Passionate Go-Getters is how they can get known – so let’s dive in and cover that today!
It is easy to say “I want to get known”, “I want to get seen” and yes PR can definitely help with that – BUT there are a few steps to go through to work out what actually getting known, seen and heard looks like for you.
The best place to start with this is to ask yourself a few questions…..
Let’s refresh ourselves first:
PR is
- about building your audience and your authority by other people talking and writing about you.
- about you getting known by featuring on other people’s channels – sharing your story and expertise (media, social media, website, podcast etc).
Ultimately it is all about building relationships. So how can you do that in the most effective way?
2 QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF:
Before you dive into looking for PR opportunities you need to know what you want to be known for and how you want to build your brand and business.
1.WHAT do you want to be known for?
Do you want to be known for your products?
Do you want to be known for the services you provide?
Do you want to be known as an expert?
Do you want to be known as a campaigner?
Do you want to be known as a change maker?
If you were being seen in the public, what would you want people to be saying about you? When they think of you, what do they think of?
So for example in the case of me, I would like to be known as a PR expert who helps people who have had a life changing experience, turned that into their expertise and want to get known for it. So everything I would do would be aimed at building my reputation and profile up in that area.
This is the starting point for any PR activity, so it is important you get it right and get it right early!
2.WHO do you want to be seen by?
PR is not a scattergun approach to get seen anywhere. You want to be seen somewhere that is going to make a difference to you, your business or your cause.
You need to be intentional in your actions. (Unless you want to be a celebrity and to be known by the general public which is a very different approach as it is a global/national personal campaign).
You need to get into the details of WHAT it is that you want to be known for and WHO by? If you want to be known for doing something, or providing a service you need to know WHO you want to know about it, in order for them to start talking about you in front of their people and endorsing you.
If you get known and seen by the right people it will equate to more success as you are speaking directly to your ideal client – which ultimately will lead to more sales, more clients, more awareness for you and your business!
Once you have clarity on these two things, you can then go and ask for opportunities to be seen in those places.
Let’s continue with the example I gave earlier.
Say I was a PR expert for charities and I wanted to help charities run better PR campaigns. Where could I find those places to build connections and relationships?
- there is a whole set of media that is trade media for charities.
- there are podcasts about charities
- there are Facebook groups about charities
So I would then focus my attention and my efforts within these areas. I could ask to provide tips or to speak within the groups, so I could start to get known and build relationships so that people know about me and what I do.
By doing this, the right people know about you and they start to know what you want to be known for and how you can support them.
It always comes back to getting seen for the right things, at the right time in the right places. For every type of PR (print media, speaking gigs etc) there are more specific steps you can take to make those things happen, which have been covered in previous blog posts but fundamentally, EVERYTHING starts from this point.
