Do you know why you need PR objectives and how to set them?

Worry not! Cheerleader PR is here….

As with anything in business you need objectives, otherwise how will you know if you have been successful?

In terms of PR, because it can be such a wide ranging area of opportunities, you need to narrow it down so that you can focus your efforts and actually achieve something, rather than trying to do everything at once (or do nothing as it is too overwhelming!)

When I hold my 2 hour strategy sessions with clients, the first questions I ask them are….

  • What do you want this business to be?
  • What is your vision?
  • What is your dream?
  • How will you know once you have become successful?

Some of my clients can be taken aback by those questions, as when you are working in your business you are so busy serving clients, you can sometimes forget about why you are doing it to begin with!

By knowing the answers to these questions you will be able to measure whether your business is actually delivering what you want your business to deliver.

Without having objectives, you won’t have a clear vision of what you want to achieve or when you are actually going to put in the time to do it!

So let’s get your objectives set up:

1.What do you want your business to be?

  • Where do you want to be seen?
  • Where do you want to build relationships?
  • Where do you need to be seen and where do you want to be seen? (could be two different things for you).

Being clear about where you want to be seen will enable you to make a plan on how to get there.

2. What do you want your PR to deliver?

Do you want a higher profile?

  • Do you want to be seen as an expert?
  • Do you want to be invited to speak on stages?
  • Do you want to drive more people into your group?

One of the criticisms of PR is that you cannot measure it. But how can you measure relationships? There is not a tangible number related to how many people have ultimately bought from you because they found you through your PR. PR is about getting people into your world and allowing you to show them what you are good at.

But there are things that we can measure:

  • How many articles you get
  • How many guest expert slots you deliver
  • How many talks that you give

Why not put goals on it? Perhaps you want to do 1 guest expert slot every week? This will help your PR become much more measurable.

Now you know the objective of your business, what you want the PR to deliver and who you need and want to speak to and get in front of to hit these objectives.

3. So, how are you going to make it happen?

How much time do you have to spend on your PR and when are you going to do it?

There are many ways in which you can do this so that it fits in with your typical day.

Perhaps at 3pm every day you will scroll through #journorequests to scan for any relevant opportunities, or you will spend 2 hours a week reaching out for guest expert slots, or spending x amount of time pitching to journalists.

What can you put into your daily/weekly routines to make sure that you hit those objectives you have set for yourself?

Get it in your diary and make sure you have building relationships as part of your day. This ensures you are doing it in a strategic way.

When your PR is linked to your business objectives, that is the strongest it can be. PR is a strategic discipline which helps you to enhance your business through relationships and reputation. PR is definitely something you need to build in time for and prioritise to make sure you achieve it.
