This is the topic I get asked the most questions on as a PR expert…..

So in order to help you get started with your PR, let’s think about the questions that you need to know the answers to… (and the questions I ask any of my clients when we first start working together!)

Who are you trying to reach?

This is the number one question and the main foundation for any marketing. Here are some examples to get those cogs working:

  1. Women aged 25-50 who love quirky and unusual handmade jewellery
  2. Women who have an interesting story and want to write their own book

You need to know who they are, what interests them and where they are hanging out in the media or online. Some useful questions to ask yourself are:

  • What interests them?
  • What do they like to read, watch, listen to?
  • What social media do they use?
  • Where are they at in their lives?
  • What can you help them with?

You must always start with your audience as this is why you are doing PR – you want to get noticed by the right people!

Don’t miss this step.

What are you trying to achieve?

What do you want the PR to help you achieve? What are your business goals?

When you do the hard work of getting your own PR, you want to make sure you get noticed by the right people and you want it to convert.

So you need to get really clear on your goals, so that all of your activity in terms of self promotion are aligned to really move your business forward.

What is your story and your expertise?

You need to get clear on yourself. I know this sounds odd…. But bear with me!

You need to understand what you bring to the table and how you got to this point.

If you haven’t already created yourself a media bio then I would highly encourage you to do so. It is a very powerful exercise that will look at your story, the highs, the lows, the journey as a whole and what you learned along the way.

So ask yourself what can you talk about more than the average person?

You have unique expertise and experience and you need to be aware of this so you know what you have to offer your ideal clients in terms of stories and content.

So if you are unsure about where to start, go back to basics with these 3 questions. Once you are clear about who you want to reach, what you want to achieve and how you can help them, then the actual ‘doing’ of your PR is so much simpler.

Begin with the end in mind!
