One of the questions I get asked ALL THE TIME?

What to do when you don’t know where to start with your PR?

Let’s start at the very beginning….

If I have a strategy call with a client, the first question is always

“Who are you trying to reach?”

This is the number one question and the basic foundation for any marketing.

Things to think about:

  • Where are they hanging out online or in traditional media?
  • What are their interests?
  • What do they like to read, watch or listen to?
  • What media do they consume?
  • Where do they take inspiration and guidance from?
  • What social media platforms do they use?
  • Where are they at in their lives?
  • What can I help them with?

Always start with your audience as ultimately they are why you are doing this work. You want to get noticed by the right people.

Next up,

“What are you trying to achieve in your business?”

What do you want the PR to help you achieve in your business?

When you are making the effort to put yourself out there, you want it to do the hard work for you. You want to be noticed by the right people and you want it to convert, so your business grows.

Things to think about:

  • What media logos will help with that?
  • What tips pieces/content could you create to help you reach that end goal?

You need to make sure that your self promotion activities, whether they are on your own social media channels or getting onto other people’s channels, will actually help your business. I have had a few media appearances on The Metro and BBC World Service and these have helped me get noticed.

….and lastly….

“What do you bring to the table?”

Now you know who you are trying to reach and what you want to achieve, we need to go back to what you can offer them and how you can support them in their journey.

Things to think about:

  • What is your story?
  • How did you get to the point that you are now at?
  • What have you learned along the way?
  • What expertise have you gained over the years?
  • What can you talk about more than the average person could?

Take some time, go back to basics and really work through these crucial questions for you business. Once you have these 3 points covered, the actual doing of it becomes a lot more straightforward.

Begin with the end in mind and the research will pay off.
